Mangia! North Beach - A History, Food & Cultural Adventure

Last Saturday Kevin, Nanette and I set off to San Francisco for Graceann Walden's walking tour of North Beach. We met our fellow walkers in Washington Square across from Saints Peter & Paul Church and were quickly introduced to Graceann's wit and humor - she's quite the entertainer!

We were introduced to the history of Saint Peter & Paul Church with a quick tour of the inside as they were getting ready for a wedding. We were then off to the Liguria Bakery where the Soracco Family has been making the most fabulous foccacia for just about 100 years. The aroma of olive oil and garlic draws you in and once you have a taste...your hooked! From here we walked to one of Kevin's and my favorite places in North Beach, the Italian French Bakery. The biscotti...Magnifico! We were able to tour the back bakery and see where all the fabulous bread, biscotti, and other bakery items are made.

Off to Joe DiMaggio restaurant where we got a personal kitchen tour from Executive Chef Brian Moran. Joe DiMaggio's is a throwback to the 1930's with it's elegant and upscale decor featuring hand selected photos from the family collection.

From Joe DiMaggio's we visited Cavalli Cafe, the North Beach Museum, Victoria Pastry, Little City Meats and Biordi Art Imports. We completed our day with a late lunch at Rose Pistola dining on marinated olives, arugula & grilled persimmon salad, seafood pasta, gnocchi, wine and a nice finish with gelatto.

With tours such as the North Beach Tour, Evening Chinatown Tour, Food Lovers Tour of San Francisco, Fillmore Jazz District , Graceann will fill your day, or evening, with history, great food, and of course wit and humor. You wont be disappointed!
